The fern being placed carefully in between the flowers to fill any glaring gaps and to make the arrangements look more complete. Plants of Cordyline Australis are also placed in between the flowers. These are spiky, and tend to accentuate the arrangement above them, and fill the little gap that is formed by the arrangements.
